CHANGELOG

Every skill, every reinstall, and why they still run.

v1.0 [1974]

INITIAL RELEASE

Shipped to New Mexico. Core dependencies: a film critic mother who made watching movies homework, a landscape that treats the wilderness as a baseline expectation, and a serious Hatch green chile problem that will affect dietary decisions for the rest of the program's life.

v1.1 NARRATIVE STRUCTURE DETECTION

Passive module installed: narrative structure detection. Involuntary. Side effect of v1.0 film critic dependency. Symptom: cannot experience a story without noticing the architecture underneath it. Persists across all subsequent versions.

v1.2 WILDERNESS

Wilderness module installed. Standard family configuration. Hiking, camping, orientation in unfamiliar terrain. Classified at the time as recreation. Later reclassified as research.

v2.0 [1993]

THEATRICAL OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALLED

Declared double major: Theatre and Spanish. Parental response: supportive but wary. Technical assessment: two seemingly unrelated modules that will, it turns out, run together constantly. Core features: live performance under pressure, ensemble coordination, the ability to inhabit other people's perspectives for extended periods, and direction of large groups toward a shared experience.

[PATCH 1994]

GRAND CANYON: SOUTH RIM TO COLORADO RIVER

Wilderness module (v1.2) activated at scale. Three-night camping trip, South Rim to Colorado River and back. Ran out of water. Filtered from limestone pools full of insects. Survived. Good dinner party story. Will eventually become a novel. (See v10.0)

v2.1

Acting module flagged internally as "career path." This classification is incorrect. Correct classification: core infrastructure. Bug persists until v4.1.

v2.2 SPANISH LANGUAGE

Spanish language module: functional fluency achieved. Primary unlocks: access to Jorge Díaz (v3.0), New Mexico dialogue in first novel (v6.2), the ability to give notes to a set designer who doesn't speak English. Secondary unlock: polyglot module: cross-cultural access, friendships across Latin America and Spain, foundational exposure to how the same idea lands differently depending on where you're standing. Empathy module dependency satisfied.

v2.3 REJECTION TOLERANCE

Theatre training includes structured, constant rejection: auditions where "no" is the default response. Module installed: the ability to hear "no" as data rather than verdict. Critical distinction: structural feedback gets incorporated; preference rejection gets noted and ignored. Hard dependency for every subsequent version. Without it, v6.2 (novels shipped), v9.x (money raised), v12.x (company rebuilt) are not possible.

v3.0 [1997]

FULBRIGHT DEPLOYMENT: CHILE

Jorge Díaz and Coert Voorhees in Chile, 1997
Chile, 1997. Jorge asked why the plays were being translated instead of written.

First international release. Mission: translate and direct plays by Jorge Díaz, one of Chile's most celebrated absurdist playwrights. Technical challenge: two American actors, musicians who spoke only Spanish, a set designer who spoke only Spanish, a set builder who spoke only English, and a director who spoke both. Ran for three weeks. Zero crashes.

v3.1

Over coffee, Jorge Díaz asked why the plays were being translated instead of written. No prior version had included this question. System reoriented.

v3.2 TRANSLATION

Translation module upgraded to full depth. Discovery: translating a play is not moving words between languages. It's rebuilding the entire experience for a new audience. Form and meaning are not separable. This module runs continuously in the background of every subsequent product. (See v9.2, v13.2)

v4.0 [1999]

HOLLYWOOD PATCH

Deployed to Los Angeles. Roles: reader for a literary manager, assistant at a production company, occasional screenwriter, periodic auditioner. Functional but directionless.

v4.1

Critical diagnostic: walked into a casting waiting room full of other versions of self. Every person in that room wanted to be there more than self did. Recognized this with unusual clarity. Acting module reclassified from "career path" to "background service." Writing module promoted to primary process. Reboot initiated. The entire reclassification took approximately 90 minutes and cost nothing.

Note: v4.0 was not an error. It was foundational. See v11.x film patch.

v5.0 [2000]

CLASSROOM DEPLOYMENT, NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

Installed: 7th grade grammar and writing teacher. Daily uptime: 8 hours minimum. Primary interface: 30 twelve-year-olds who did not choose to be there. Performance required regardless.

v5.1 GAME RULES OBSERVATION

Observation logged during daily instruction: grammar rules function exactly like the norms of interpersonal interaction. Every part of speech has a defined role. Nouns anchor. Verbs drive. Adjectives modify but cannot act alone. The system has internal logic, consistent behavior, and consequences for violation. Filed for later use. (See v9.0, v12.1)

v5.2 ↩ Reinstall

Acting module from v2.0 reinstalled. Teaching is performance. Six years performing for an audience that didn't buy tickets, in front of students who would tell you immediately if you lost them. Better preparation for pitching than any MBA.

[PATCH 2001]

SPOUSE MODULE

Married Molly. She was working in tech; would move to Stanford for her MBA; would then run a restaurant company. None of this was foreseeable. All of it mattered. Installed: long-term collaborative operating context. Hard dependency for every subsequent version that required judgment about whether something was actually a good idea.

v6.0 [2006]

MFA: UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON

Relocated to Houston. Installed: MFA in Creative Writing. Note: Houston was intended as a temporary deployment. It was not.

[PATCH 2006]

RESTAURANT INDUSTRY PAIN POINTS

Molly moved to Houston to run a restaurant company. Proximity was total and instructive. Installed: deep operational understanding of an industry where margins are brutal, staffing is chaotic, customer loyalty is fickle, and the difference between a great experience and a disaster is often thirty seconds. Filed under "context that will matter later." (See v12.1, v13.3)

[PATCH 2006]

FATHER MODULE v1.0

Son born. New primary dependency installed. Immediate consequences: sleep deprivation, radical priority reconfiguration, and the discovery that patience is not a character trait but a learned skill with a very steep curve. (See v2.0, ASM patch)

v6.1 RUTHLESS CUTTING

Core editing skill acquired: cutting ruthlessly. An MFA is largely an extended exercise in identifying what doesn't need to exist and removing it. The skill transfers to products, pitch decks, and company roadmaps. (See v12.4)

v6.2 [2008] THE BROTHERS TORRES
The Brothers Torres book cover

First novel published while still a student. Named ALA Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults, 2009. Dependencies required: New Mexico Spanish module (v2.2), classroom experience (v5.0), green chile cooking research conducted for entirely professional reasons.

v7.0 [~2009]

VISITING WRITER IN RESIDENCE: RICE UNIVERSITY

Lucky Fools book cover

Temporary academic deployment. Lucky Fools and In Too Deep shipped. Writing life functioning as intended.

v7.1 IN TOO DEEP: RESEARCH ESCALATION
In Too Deep book cover

Novel required scuba diving scenes. Acquired: PADI Open Water certification. Then: Rescue Diver. Then: Master Scuba Diver. Then: Underwater Hunter. Then: Diver Propulsion Vehicle. The novel did not require all of these. The certifications remain active.

v7.2 ↩ Reinstall

Rejection tolerance from v2.3 reinstalled. Publishing requires submitting work to strangers who will sometimes tell you it isn't ready. In print. In Kirkus Reviews. Module held.

[PATCH 2009]

FATHER MODULE v2.0

Daughter born. Father module expanded to two-instance configuration. New observation: each child is a completely different interface requiring a completely different approach. The skills do not transfer. The patience does. (See ASM patch)

v9.0 [2011]

GRAMMAROPOLIS v1.0

Meet the Parts of Speech — Grammaropolis
10 million YouTube views. 2.5 million app downloads. 15 years.

Grammar characters from v5.1, running in the background for over a decade, promoted to primary process. Raised $900,000+. Shipped animated videos, apps, games, books, and a platform used in thousands of schools.

v9.1 ↩ Reinstall

Acting module from v2.0 reinstalled. Raising $900K requires the same skill as directing a play: a confident character who knows exactly what they want the audience to feel, with no visible seams. The waiting room from v4.1 was practice.

Rejection tolerance from v2.3 reinstalled. "No" is the most common investor response. The ones who eventually say yes rarely say it first.

v9.2 ↩ Reinstall

Translation module from v3.2 reinstalled. Building for 7th graders means translating grammar into something a 12-year-old will actually participate in. Same problem as Jorge Díaz. Different language pair.

v9.3 ↩ Reinstall

Hostile audience management from v5.0 reinstalled. The kids don't have to like this. They have to use it anyway. Design accordingly.

v9.4

10 million YouTube views. 2.5 million app downloads. 15 years and still running.

[PATCH ~2013]

CORPORATE CONSULTING

Concurrent with Grammaropolis development: built an educational video series to help 70,000 BHP Billiton employees learn a new enterprise system.

↩ Reinstall: translation module from v3.2 and hostile audience management from v5.0. Same problem as the classroom. Larger classroom.

[PATCH 2013-2022]

ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER

Became Assistant Scoutmaster for both son's and daughter's Scout troops. Nine years. Not a childhood scouter. Came in cold. Installed: actual wilderness operations credential (distinguished from the Grand Canyon patch, which was an adventure; this was leadership). Both kids made Eagle Scout. (See Back to the Lot)

↩ Reinstall: wilderness module from v1.2. Running at full operational capacity for nine consecutive years. Reclassified from childhood baseline to professional credential.

v10.0 [2017]

ON THE FREE

On the Free book cover

Wilderness survival novel. Three teenagers stranded in the Colorado wilderness after a therapy program goes wrong. Seeds: v1.2 (wilderness module, installed from birth) and the Grand Canyon patch (1994, limestone pools, insects, no water). Both required for compilation.

v10.1 ↩ Reinstall

Ruthless cutting from v6.1 reinstalled. The novel was longer. Then it wasn't.

v11.0 [2018]

SIX FOOT PRESS

A Houston video game company hired a novelist to start a publishing house. The job description was unclear. The fit was perfect.

v11.1

New environment exposure: video game studio. Extended observation of game designers at work. Finding: game designers and novelists are solving the same problem. Both ask: how do I make someone want to continue? What is the next beat? Module tagged for future use. (See v12.1)

v11.2 ↩ Reinstall

Ensemble coordination from v2.0 reinstalled. Building a company inside a company with a film producer requires the same logic as directing: many people, one coherent experience, the audience never sees the seams.

[PATCH ~2016]

FOR KEEPS

For Keeps film poster

Short film. Wrote the screenplay. Directed by Vicky Wight. Official selection, 13 film festivals. First collaboration with Wight. Consequence: four more films as EP and crew over the next seven years. (See film patch.)

[PATCH 2015-2020]

SPINNING INSTRUCTOR

Certified. Installed: rhythm module, the specific skill of pushing a group past the point where they want to stop, and performance while people are in pain. Misclassified at the time as exercise. Correct classification: product management training.

v12.0 [2022]

ARDEN LABS

Co-founded. Original mission: infrastructure for the video game industry. Market shifted.

v12.1

Pivot executed. Rebuilt around gamified engagement: the mechanics that make games compelling (progression, challenges, achievements, narrative stakes) applied to how brands build real relationships with real people.

↩ Reinstall: game rules observation from v5.1. The parts of speech taught this. Games confirmed it.

↩ Reinstall: restaurant industry pain points from 2006 patch. Years of proximity to Molly's restaurant operations provided the exact use case: an industry with brutal margins, no captive audience, and customers who leave and never come back. The loyalty problem was familiar. The solution required a loyalty platform.

v12.2

Observation: this is identical to the premise of Grammaropolis (v9.0). If you design an experience well enough, people forget they're being taught something, or sold something, and they just participate. Grammar and loyalty are the same problem.

v12.3

Became CEO.

↩ Reinstall: performance under pressure from v2.0, hostile audience management from v5.0, investor pitch character from v9.1.

v12.4 ↩ Reinstall

Ruthless cutting from v6.1 reinstalled. Rebuilding a company from scratch requires the same skill as editing a novel: identify what doesn't need to exist, remove it, keep only what serves the through-line.

Rejection tolerance from v2.3 reinstalled. Hear the structural feedback. Ignore the noise. Continue.

v13.0 [2025]

LISNR ACQUISITION

Coert Voorhees

LISNR acquired Arden Labs on December 31, 2024. Deployment effective January 1, 2025. VP of Commercial.

v13.1

New product added: Radius. Transmits data via inaudible audio tones. Hardware-agnostic. Offline-capable. Presence detection, proximity verification, contactless authentication. Available on any device with a speaker or microphone. No specialized hardware required.

v13.2 ↩ Reinstall

Translation module from v3.2 reinstalled. Every new deployment market (transit, retail, banking, venues) is a translation problem. Same technology, new audience, new language. Jorge Díaz would understand.

v13.3 CURRENT

Writing Studio in development. The grammar characters from v5.1, first appearing in a Northern California classroom, then animated, then 10 million YouTube views and 15 years of schools, now have AI. The noun knows what he's doing. The adjective still can't stop making everything more colorful. The adverb is still a little much.

↩ Reinstall: restaurant industry pain points from 2006 patch. Third deployment. Advising on Winfield's Chocolate Bar: Molly's Houston artisan chocolate company expanding into corporate and institutional gifting. The restaurant pain points module proves broadly applicable to any business where the product is exceptional, margins are tight, and customer relationships are the only durable asset.

All systems running.
